Richard Paige is a fine leather goods company founded in 2017 by husband and wife-duo Tom & Brit Schell. Every piece is hand-sewn with quality materials from leather purveyors around the world. The couple strives to create completely handcrafted products in a simplistic and modern way, while still respecting the traditional craft of the past.
Australian leather craftsman, Tom Schell, has always loved working with his hands, no matter the medium. He first got into leather work in 2014 when his wife, Brit, mentioned her need for a simple black clutch. Always fascinated with how things are made and true artisanal work, this first bag was therefore created solely by hand. As the clean and classic aesthetic of the bags began to resonate with others and Tom’s ever-persisting itch to create with his hands full-time continued to grow, Richard Paige was formed in 2016. The attention to detail and quality that he values in traditional artisan craftsmanship is now a philosophy he applies to his leather work. The proof is in the look and feel of their bags and the display of heart and perseverance behind them.
We believe in modern designs, crafted in the traditional way. We believe in paying respect to the artisans before us while designing pieces that will be worn far in the future.
Tom made his first bag in 2014 for his wife simply by picking up a few tools and a hide, and nothing has really changed. They still use their hands, effective machinery and basic tools to make leather bags and accessories with simplistic, thoughtful design, and a passion for perfection in every detail. Tom mostly uses what's called a saddle stitch, which is a stitch that can only be created by hand; this style of stitching far outlasts that on a machine and ensures a leather good that represents artisanal craft and will last for years and years.
Richard Paige pieces are fulfilled on a made-to-order basis to ensure they are not contributing to excess waste, something that they are constantly striving to be mindful of. They source their premium leather from Italian, French and Australian tanneries and mindfully manufacture their bags in their studio in Adelaide, Australia.
